Chris
Hill's "906"
Off Road racing vehicle technology has
evolved over the years to a point where it's no longer
possible to run stock or
beefed up VW parts and remain competitive. Not like
the old days of running standard Beetle parts in a
buggy or baja and still be winning races. With the engines
of today, the top speed of off-roaders are getting so
fast that you need to run a wide variety of components
that are designed and tested specifically to withstand
the bumps and jumps of off road racing. How are these
parts tested? At Idlewild we test these parts on our
own race
cars first before we sell them. Components that we build
or design ourselves are able to be rigourously tested
before
we approve the components for sale. This gives us a
greater understanding of simply what works and what
doesn't!
Our Class 9 off road racer "906" is one of
these testing vehicles.
"906" is built on a 110" wheelbase steel
frame with a chromoly front beam. Suspension starts
at the front with
four Bilstein coilover shock absorbers and Eibach springs
controlling 18 inches of travel. The Idlewild designed
front end
runs a four inch longer top mount arm with 22mm king
and link pins, which hold the jumbo 44mm stub axles,
alloy hubs,
and motorcycle brakes.
The steering is done with an Idlewild modified Char-Lynn
power steering system. The rack is fitted with
Idlewild tie rod pins to run Aurora high misalignment
rod ends and chromoly tie rods. The rear of the car
runs 16 inches of
travel which is controlled by Sway-a-way Racerunner
coilover shocks with 7/8 shafts and remore reservoir
with
Eibach springs. The axles are each over 25 inches long
and have Idlewild modified 930 Porsche CV's with chromoly
cages on the ends. The rear alloy hubs hold the Centreline
beadlock rear wheels on. Tyres are all Yokohama at this
stage but we are looking for better. The front tyres
are 650x15 Y825 race tyres hand grooved for better grip
and the
rears are 31x10.50x15 Geolander M/T.
As for the controls they are basic...the dash is made
up of Hella shockproof lights and switches with no guages
to be
seen apart from an AutoMeter monster tacho that is only
used for the shift light. This is because you don't
want a lot
going on in the cockpit to distract your eyes off what
you are doing at high speed.
The car itself weighs in at 562kg with a fuel load of
40 litres in its 75 litre tank, plus the weight of the
driver. The engine is
an almost standard Nissan SR20DE with an aftermarket
computer which enables to motor to produce around the
120HP
mark. The transaxle is a specially built 2lt 091 case
with Albins gears and Super Diff among other things.
An all new car is being built for the 2007-8 race season
so keep a look out for things starting to take shape
soon...
